Citibank UAE Review: Accounts, Cards and Eligibility

Citibank UAE

Rating: ★★★★☆ 4.0 / 5

Citibank has been in the UAE since 1964, when Citi opened its first branch in Dubai. Abu Dhabi followed in 1971, and the bank still publishes both dates on its own About Us page.

Citi UAE is not a mass-market retail bank. Its own site lists four branches, one smart center, three Citigold lounges and 39 ATMs, and it sells wealth management and credit cards rather than mortgages or SME accounts.

Citibank, N.A. UAE Branch is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE as a branch of a foreign bank. That line is printed at the foot of the bank’s own Key Facts Statements, which is where most of the numbers on this page come from.

Citi also runs a DIFC office, opened in 2006 under the Dubai Financial Services Authority, and an ADGM branch licensed in 2018 for clients setting up regional treasury centers.

Best For

  • Professionals earning AED 15,000 or more per month who want a bank with genuine international reach, layered with strong credit card rewards and access to wealth advisory services
  • Frequent flyers who will make consistent use of Citi Miles, lounge access, and the Citibank Global Wallet’s fee-free spending across nine currencies while traveling
  • Investors who want a single platform to reach global equities, mutual funds, bonds, and structured products through an in-house brokerage
  • Expats who move between countries for work and want a banking relationship that can travel with them rather than starting from zero each time

Not Ideal For

  • Anyone opening their first UAE bank account on a modest salary, since the standard current account demands a AED 3,000 minimum average balance and Citigold sits at a steep USD 200,000 entry point
  • Customers who depend on being able to walk into a nearby branch or find an ATM on every corner: Citibank’s UAE network is deliberately thin
  • Small business owners hunting for SME accounts, POS integration, or merchant banking, none of which Citi UAE offers to retail clients
  • People who simply want a plain, fee-free everyday account without needing premium features or international perks

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A genuinely global relationship. With operations in 98 markets, Citibank offers something few UAE banks can match: continuity. Expats relocating for work can often carry their banking history and relationship forward instead of rebuilding credit and trust from scratch in a new country.
  • A credit card lineup built for different budgets. From the ultra-premium Citi Ultima, which bundles airline discounts and a free third hotel night, down to the Citi Simplicity card that charges zero annual fee and zero penalty fees, the range covers very different customer profiles under one roof.
  • The Global Wallet feature. Linked to the debit card, this multi-currency tool supports nine currencies: AED, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, NZD, CHF, and JPY, with no foreign transaction markup and the option to lock in exchange rates ahead of time.
  • Serious wealth management infrastructure. Citigold and Citigold Private Client tiers open the door to mutual funds, bonds, structured notes, and direct equity trading, backed by relationship managers who draw on Citi’s broader global research.
  • A capable mobile app. The Citi Mobile App goes well beyond basic transfers, supporting investment trading, FX rate alerts, card controls, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and instant activation of the Global Wallet.

Cons

  • A very small physical footprint. Four branches and 39 ATMs is thin for a country this size. Citi’s own Key Facts Statement confirms that switch charges apply whenever you use a non-Citi machine, locally or abroad.
  • Steep entry thresholds. A basic account needs AED 3,000 sitting in it every month or a AED 25 fee kicks in, while Citigold starts at USD 200,000 and Citigold Private Client at a full USD 1,000,000.
  • No salary transfer package. Citi’s personal banking menu lists current, savings, CitiBest and time deposit accounts only. There is no salary-transfer bundle of the kind local banks build around a salary certificate.
  • Borrowing runs through the card, not a loan account. Citi UAE sells Ready Credit, Loan on Card, Easy Instalment Plan and Balance Transfer, and lists no standalone personal loan product in its personal banking menu.
  • The published fee schedule is hard to read. Citi publishes Fees and Charges as a July 2026 PDF whose tables do not render as selectable text, so remittance costs cannot be checked without calling the bank.

Detailed Product Breakdown

Current Account The Everyday Banking Core

Citibank’s standard current account is aimed at UAE residents who want a functional transactional account with international reach built in. It comes with a personalized chequebook, unlimited cheque usage, and a Mastercard-branded debit card that withdraws free of charge at any Citibank ATM worldwide: up to AED 40,000 daily for Citigold and Citigold Private Client holders, and AED 20,000 for standard customers. The account supports multiple major currencies and bundles in round-the-clock phone banking alongside the usual online and mobile access.

The catch sits in the minimum balance requirement: AED 3,000 on average each month, or a AED 25 monthly fee applies (waived for Citigold and CPC clients). Opening one requires an in-person branch visit with an Emirates ID, passport, and proof of address, and applicants must be at least 18 years old. There’s no digital onboarding path for brand-new customers, which is worth knowing before assuming this can be set up remotely. Anyone able to maintain relationship balances above USD 200,000 may find it worthwhile to ask about upgrading straight into Citigold instead.

Citi Ultima: The Flagship Travel Card

Positioned at the top of Citi’s card range, the Ultima carries a AED 3,000 annual fee and requires a minimum monthly salary of AED 36,750 to qualify. In return, cardholders get 50% off one set of airline tickets per year (capped at AED 2,000), an unlimited third-night-free benefit at hotels worldwide, 14 airport lounge visits annually, four Careem airport transfers, complimentary check-in service four times a year, and the ability to move accumulated Citi Miles across 11 partner airlines and hotel groups, including names like Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and British Airways. New cardholders earn a AED 1,500 joining bonus statement credit for spending AED 25,000 in the first 60 days. Citi limits that offer to new credit card customers who apply directly through its website, and says applicants who arrive through a search advert or a third-party link do not qualify.

Whether the AED 3,000 fee justifies itself really comes down to travel frequency. Someone flying a handful of times a year and actually redeeming the lounge, hotel, and airline perks will likely come out ahead; someone who mostly spends locally will probably get better everyday value from a different card in the lineup.

Citi Cash Back: Built for Everyday Spending

This card targets residents who prefer automatic cashback over tracking points across categories. It pays 3% back on all non-AED transactions, 2% on groceries, and 1% on everything else, with no minimum spend threshold and no category exclusions up to the credit limit. The AED 300 annual fee is waived in the first year automatically, and it stays waived from year two onward as long as annual spending reaches AED 9,000.

Qualifying requires a minimum salary of AED 8,000 per month. Holders also get access to roughly 1,200 airport lounges through Mastercard Travel Pass, a monthly Talabat discount worth up to AED 14, a AED 40 monthly discount at Carrefour, and one complimentary Careem airport transfer each year. One trade-off worth flagging: international purchases on this card still attract a 2.99% foreign transaction fee, which eats into the 3% cashback earned on those same purchases. For genuinely fee-free overseas spending, the Global Wallet on the debit card is the better tool.

Citi Simplicity: A No-Penalty Backup Card

Simplicity strips things down to the essentials. There’s no annual fee, ever, and no late payment fee, no cash advance fee, and no over-limit fee either. It also offers a six-month 0% interest window on balance transfers, which makes it a genuinely useful option for consolidating existing card debt. At AED 5,000 per month, it also carries the lowest salary requirement across Citi’s entire card range.

What it lacks is just as clear: no rewards program, no lounge access, no premium extras. It’s a purely functional product for people who want to avoid unexpected charges, and it works well as a secondary card kept alongside a rewards-focused one, since holding it costs nothing.

What Every Citi UAE Card Costs and the Salary It Needs

Citi publishes one table covering all seven of its UAE cards in its Credit Cards Key Facts Statement, dated July 2026. Every figure below is taken from that document rather than from a comparison site.

VAT applies on top of those fees. The floor for any Citi card is a verifiable income of AED 5,000 a month, and applicants must be aged between 18 and 64 on the date they apply.

The card interest rate goes up on 1 October 2026. Citi’s July 2026 Key Facts Statement says the 44.28% annual percentage rate applies to every card except Citi Ready Credit from 1 October 2026. Until that date the existing rate of 42% applies, and Citi Ready Credit stays at 39%.

What the Joining Bonus Is Worth on Each Card

Citi lists a welcome offer against five of its seven cards on its own compare page. Each one is a statement credit or cashback paid after a minimum spend in the first 60 days.

CardJoining bonusMinimum spend in 60 days
Citi UltimaAED 1,500 statement creditAED 25,000
Citi PrestigeAED 1,000 cashbackAED 15,000
Citi PremierAED 750 cashbackAED 10,000
Citi Cash BackAED 300 statement creditAED 6,000
Citi RewardsAED 300 cashbackAED 6,000

Citi Cash Back and Citi Rewards charge no annual fee in year one. From year two the AED 300 fee is waived unless annual spend falls below AED 9,000, in which case it applies.

Citi Ready Credit is the odd one out. It quotes a rate starting from 15% a year on the first loan booked within one month of card approval, for new Citi customers only, with a limit of up to 6 times monthly income or AED 175,000, whichever is lower, and no early settlement fee.

Digital Experience: App and Online Banking

Citibank UAE - who it suits

Citi Mobile App. We do not quote app store scores on this page. The ratings and review counts shown on the App Store and Google Play could not be read from a fixed, citable source when this review was checked in September 2026.

The mobile app functions as Citibank UAE’s main digital touchpoint, and it handles far more than routine transfers. Customers can build an investor profile, complete W-8BEN tax paperwork, and buy or sell global equities and mutual funds directly from their phone: a level of investment functionality that’s rare for a banking app in this market. The Global Wallet switches on with a single tap, both debit and credit cards activate instantly through the app, and the FX Order Watch tool lets users set a target exchange rate and have transactions execute automatically once it’s hit. Apple Pay and Google Pay both work on Mastercard credit cards, and real-time push notifications keep transaction activity visible as it happens.

Two app functions are worth knowing about before you sign up. Global Wallet is switched on from inside the app in one step, and a lost or stolen card can be blocked there at any hour without calling.

AANI Instant Payments in the Citi App

Citi UAE has AANI live in the Citi Mobile app. AANI is the national instant payment service run by Al Etihad Payments under the Central Bank of the UAE, and Citi says it settles in under 10 seconds, 24 hours a day.

You send to a mobile number, an email address or a QR code instead of an IBAN. The app also handles split bill, request money, and accepting, declining or cancelling a pending request.

Citi Online Banking rounds out the digital offering through the web portal at online.citibank.ae, which covers statement access, transfers, standing instructions, investment portfolio oversight, secure messaging for service requests, and card management. It also allows customers to generate their IBAN, activate cards, register for online access, and set up Easy Instalment Plans: all without visiting a branch.

Branch and Coverage Availability

Citi UAE is a Dubai and Abu Dhabi operation. Its own locations page lists four branches, three Citigold lounges and 31 ATM entries, with nothing at all in Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain.

Note the gap between two Citi pages. The About Us page says 39 ATMs, while the public locator listed 31 entries when we checked in September 2026, 30 of them taking cash deposits and one, at DIFC, withdrawal only.

BranchAddress as Citi publishes itTeller and customer service hours
Al Wasl, DubaiAl Wasl Branch, Sheikh Rashid Road, next to Wafi CityMonday to Saturday 08:00 to 14:00, Friday 07:30 to 12:30, closed Sunday
Mall of the Emirates, DubaiMall of the Emirates, Al BarshaMonday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, Friday 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 16:30, closed Sunday

Abu DhabiAbu Dhabi main branch, Al Khyeli building, Al Falah StreetMonday to Saturday 08:00 to 14:00, Friday 07:30 to 12:30, closed Sunday

Al Wasl and Abu Dhabi close between 12:30 and 14:30 on Friday for prayers. The Jumeirah Financial Centre site has no teller counter, so cash and cheque business has to go to one of the other three.

The three Citigold lounges are at the Abu Dhabi branch on Al Falah Street, at the Al Wasl branch on Sheikh Rashid Road, and at 439B Jumeirah Beach Road, Jumeirah 3, Dubai. Lounge hours are 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 14:00 on Saturday.

What Citigold and Citigold Private Client Actually Require

Citi publishes both entry points on its own site, in dollars rather than dirhams. The test is total relationship balance, which means deposits and investments held with Citi taken together, not salary.

TierMinimum total relationship balanceWhat Citi lists against it
CitigoldUSD 200,000 to USD 999,999Annual fee waiver on select premium Citi credit cards, preferential FX rates, a relationship manager supported by an insurance specialist and a treasury expert
Citigold Private ClientUSD 1,000,000 and aboveA dedicated senior relationship manager and preferential FX rates

Both tiers escape the AED 25 monthly account fee entirely, and both drop the withdrawal limits that apply to standard customers. Citi also runs Citigold across Singapore and the UAE with a single relationship manager based in the UAE.

Where to Take a Complaint Citi Does Not Fix

Complain to Citi first, at uaeservice@citi.com or on +971 4 311 4000, and keep the date they received it. Citi routes escalations to escalationcomplaintresolution@citi.com.

If 30 calendar days pass without a resolution, the complaint can go to Sanadak, the independent ombudsman unit set up under the Central Bank of the UAE. Sanadak is on 800 726 2325 and sits in the Emirates Institute of Finance building in Abu Dhabi.

Its hours are 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30am to 11:30am on Friday. Sanadak handles licensed banks and insurers, so a Citi UAE branch complaint is in scope.

FAQ

How do I open a Citibank account in the UAE?

Account opening requires an in-person branch visit with a valid passport, Emirates ID, and proof of address. Applicants must be at least 18, and there’s currently no online path for new customers to open an account remotely.

Can non-residents bank with Citibank UAE?

Retail accounts are primarily built for UAE residents and nationals, with limited options for non-residents. It’s best to contact the bank directly at +971 4 311 4000 to check eligibility for your specific situation.

What’s the minimum balance I need to maintain?

Standard current and savings accounts require an average of AED 3,000 monthly, with a AED 25 fee if you fall short. Citigold needs USD 200,000 in combined balances and investments, while Citigold Private Client requires USD 1,000,000.

What is Citibank UAE’s SWIFT code?

CITIAEAD. Citi publishes it on its own IBAN generator page, and the BIC registry lists the same code against Citibank N.A. in Dubai at Gate Precinct Building 2, Level 7, Unit 1, DIFC. We found no separate code for any other Citi UAE office, so we do not quote one.

How long do international wire transfers take?

Citi does not publish a delivery time. Its Key Facts Statement says the actual time can differ from any estimate because of correspondent bank checks, and that the correspondent may levy fees of its own.

How do I close my account?

Visit a branch with your Emirates ID and debit card, settle any outstanding balances, close linked cards or loans, and return your chequebook. Alternatively, the Write To Us feature in Citi Online or an email to uaeservice@citi.com can start the process.

Are personal loans still available?

Citi UAE lists no standalone personal loan product in its personal banking menu. Borrowing is sold through the cards instead, as Ready Credit, Loan on Card, Easy Instalment Plan and Balance Transfer, though the bank’s About Us page still describes Citi as a provider of consumer credit including personal loans.

Does Citibank UAE offer home loans or mortgages?

No, mortgage and home finance products aren’t part of the current retail lineup, so customers looking for property financing will need to approach a different lender.

What salary do I need for a Citi credit card in the UAE?

The floor is a verifiable income of AED 5,000 a month, which qualifies for Citi Simplicity. The July 2026 Key Facts Statement puts Citi Rewards, Citi Cash Back and Citi Ready Credit at AED 8,000, Citi Premier at AED 15,000, Citi Prestige at AED 30,000 and Citi Ultima at AED 36,750.

What interest does a Citi UAE credit card charge?

The annual percentage rate is 42% until 30 September 2026 and 44.28% from 1 October 2026 on every card except Citi Ready Credit, which stays at 39%. That works out at 3.69% a month, or 3.25% for Ready Credit.

How long is the interest free period on a Citi card?

A maximum of 52 days on a purchase made on the first day of a statement cycle and a minimum of 21 days on one made on the last day. There is no interest free period on cash advances, Loan on Card, Easy Instalment Plan or Balance Transfer on Card.

How much is the Citibank UAE minimum balance fee?

AED 25 a month per account when the minimum monthly average balance falls under AED 3,000. Citigold and Citigold Private Client clients are not charged it.

Does Citibank UAE support AANI instant payments?

Yes. AANI is live in the Citi Mobile app, and Citi says transfers settle in under 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, using a mobile number, email address or QR code instead of an IBAN.

How many branches and ATMs does Citibank UAE have?

Citi’s About Us page says four branches, one smart center, three Citigold lounges and 39 ATMs. Its public locator listed 31 ATM entries in September 2026, so the two Citi pages do not agree.

Where do I escalate a Citibank UAE complaint?

To Sanadak, the independent ombudsman unit created under the Central Bank of the UAE. Complain to Citi first and wait 30 calendar days from the date they received it, then call Sanadak on 800 726 2325.
