HBL UAE works best as a focused utility bank, not a full-service option for everyone. Pakistani expats get real value from the HBL Fast Transfer remittance service, the direct link to HBL Pakistan accounts and decades of corridor experience newer banks do not have.
Where it falls short is just as clear. HBL UAE does not issue its own credit cards or a retail home finance product, and its branch network covers only 4 of the 7 emirates. The digital experience handles basics but trails what newer UAE digital banks offer.
If your main banking needs are Pakistan remittance, a straightforward AED account and occasional branch support, HBL UAE delivers. If you want a credit card, a mortgage or wide branch coverage, other UAE banks will serve you better.
Rating: 3.8 out of 5
Who Actually Benefits From Banking Here
Pakistani expats who send money home regularly will find HBL UAE hard to beat. HBL Fast Transfer sends remittances to Pakistan for free once the amount is USD 100 or more, per the bank’s own 2026 schedule of charges.
Salaried residents who want a simple AED account without complicated conditions will also fit well. The minimum monthly average balance is AED 5,000 for a resident personal account, confirmed directly on HBL’s UAE account pages.
SMEs with trade links to Pakistan benefit from a corporate team that has handled that corridor for decades, covering trade finance, transaction solutions and treasury services. Anyone who wants a safe deposit locker at a competitive rate also has a genuine reason to bank here, since lockers start at AED 420 a year.
Where HBL Will Disappoint You
Residents in Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain have no branch nearby. HBL UAE operates from just 4 branches, one each in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, according to the bank’s own branch locator.
If you want a credit card, HBL UAE cannot help. The bank’s UAE product pages and its 2026 schedule of charges list debit cards only. No credit card, and no Islamic or conventional home finance product, appears anywhere in HBL’s official UAE account lineup.
Anyone expecting a smooth digital-only experience will struggle too. Some tasks that modern UAE banks handle inside an app still require an HBL branch visit, and the interface looks dated next to Liv., Wio or Mashreq Neo.

The Good and the Not So Good
Strengths Worth Talking About
Remittance to Pakistan is the real product here. HBL Fast Transfer is free once you send USD 100 or more, and costs AED 10.50 per transaction below that, per HBL’s own 2026 fee schedule. Other banks offer Pakistan remittance too, but HBL’s direct network connection to HBL Pakistan accounts is a genuine edge.
Safe deposit lockers still exist here. Bur Dubai and Sharjah branches offer lockers, and the 2026 schedule of charges lists exact annual rents: AED 420 for small, AED 525 for medium and AED 1,050 for large, plus a refundable AED 1,000 security deposit. If you keep an overall relationship balance of USD 100,000 or more, HBL waives the rent on one locker.
Term deposits are simple to open. The minimum is AED 10,000 for a local currency term deposit, or USD 5,000 for a foreign currency one. HBL does not publish a fixed rate online, so ask your branch for the current rate before you commit, and know that early withdrawal carries no fixed penalty beyond the prevailing rate for the tenor actually held.
The trade team knows the Pakistan corridor. Business banking covers trade finance, financing solutions, transaction solutions, treasury services, syndications, secured business loans and equipment or vehicle financing. HBL’s corporate relationship managers have handled UAE-Pakistan trade for decades, which is not something a newer bank replicates quickly.
Local transfers are cheap. Sending AED to another UAE bank through the Instant Payment Platform costs AED 0.50 per transaction from a branch or the mobile app, and transfers received into an HBL UAE account are free.
Weaknesses That Matter
Four emirates with no branch at all. If you live in Ajman, RAK, Fujairah or UAQ, everything has to be done digitally or over the phone. That works for routine tasks but becomes a problem when you need something done in person.
No credit card and no home finance. HBL’s UAE product pages list current accounts, savings accounts, term deposits, lockers and debit cards, and nothing else for retail customers. If you need a credit card or a mortgage, you will need a different bank; do not confuse HBL’s Pakistan-only Gold, Green or Islamic home finance products with a UAE offering.
ATM network is small. HBL’s own machines exist only at its 4 branch locations, though the debit card also works across the wider UAE Switch and Visa networks. Customers who need frequent cash access from a dedicated HBL ATM will feel the limitation.
The mobile app has not kept up. HBL UAE Mobile covers the basics but feels dated compared with what Liv., Wio or Mashreq Neo offer today. Certain account tasks still require a branch visit instead of an in-app action.
HBL’s global compliance history is worth knowing. In 2017, New York’s Department of Financial Services fined Habib Bank Limited $225 million and the bank agreed to close its New York branch, over anti-money-laundering and sanctions compliance failures. That action targeted HBL’s New York branch specifically, not its UAE operation, and HBL UAE continues to operate under a banking license from the Central Bank of the UAE.
Products Explained Honestly
HBL UAE’s retail lineup is narrow but clearly documented: current accounts, savings accounts, term deposits, lockers, debit cards and an IBAN service. There is no credit card and no home finance product listed for UAE retail customers.
Current and Savings Accounts

The HBL SavingsAccount and HBL CurrentAccount both open in AED, USD, EUR, GBP and other major currencies. A resident needs a monthly average balance of AED 5,000 or equivalent; a non-resident current account needs USD 50,000 or equivalent, per HBL’s own account pages.
Both accounts include a free first debit card, free e-statement, free e-SWIFT and free SMS alerts. Home remittance to Pakistan is free once the transaction is over USD 100.
Falling below the minimum balance is not free. HBL’s 2026 schedule of charges lists a fee of AED 105 a month if a resident account’s average balance drops below AED 5,000, and AED 262.50 a month for a non-resident relationship below USD 50,000.
Term Deposits
HBL Term Deposit needs AED 10,000 minimum in local currency, or USD 5,000 in a foreign currency, and runs on tenors the bank sets from time to time. Interest rates are not published on HBL’s website, so confirm the current rate at your branch before you commit.
Encashing a term deposit early carries no separate penalty charge, but you earn the prevailing rate for the tenor you actually held rather than the rate quoted for your original term. Ask for that rate in writing before you open the deposit.
Debit Cards
HBL UAE issues Visa Classic, Visa Gold and Visa Platinum debit cards rather than credit cards. The first primary card is free; a supplementary card or a replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged card costs AED 26.25.
Foreign currency transactions add a processing fee of up to 2% on top of the exchange rate applied, per the 2026 schedule of charges. The debit card also gives access to more than 5,000 Visa-network ATMs in the UAE and over 1.9 million worldwide, according to HBL’s own account pages.
Safe Deposit Lockers
Lockers are only available at the Bur Dubai and Sharjah branches, confirmed directly on HBL’s lockers page. Pricing and sizes come straight from the bank’s 2026 schedule of charges.
| Locker Size | Annual Rental (in advance) | Security Deposit |
| Small | AED 420 | AED 1,000 (refundable) |
| Medium | AED 525 | AED 1,000 (refundable) |
| Large | AED 1,050 | AED 1,000 (refundable) |
A lost or replaced key costs a minimum of AED 1,575 or the actual cost, whichever is higher. Late rent payment adds 10% of the annual rent plus VAT. Customers with an overall relationship balance of USD 100,000 or more get the rent on one locker waived, though other charges still apply.
Business Banking

The Business Current Account needs a minimum opening balance of AED 10,000, with free HBL Internet Banking and e-statements. Separately, HBL’s 2026 fee schedule sets a monthly average balance of AED 25,000 to avoid a AED 262.50 monthly account-level fee, so check both figures with your relationship manager before opening.
Business lending runs through Trade Finance, Financing Solutions, Transaction Solutions, Treasury Services, Syndications, Secured Business Loans and Equipment and Vehicle Financing, as listed on HBL’s own business banking pages. HBL does not publish a specific lending ceiling for UAE SMEs online, so ask a relationship manager for numbers that apply to your business.
The real advantage for Pakistan-linked businesses is the team, not a headline loan figure. HBL’s relationship managers who work the trade desk understand the paperwork, timelines and correspondent relationships that make UAE-Pakistan trade finance work in practice.
Fees You Should Know Before You Sign
Every figure below comes from HBL’s own 2026 Schedule of Charges for the UAE, published on hbl.com/uae. Fees change, so download the current schedule from the official site before opening any account.
| Fee Type | Amount |
| Resident Savings/Current Minimum Balance | AED 5,000; AED 105/month fee if below |
| Non-Resident Current Account Minimum | USD 50,000; AED 262.50/month fee if below |
| Business Current Account Opening Minimum | AED 10,000 |
| Business Account-Level Balance (fee-free) | AED 25,000; AED 262.50/month fee if below |
| Term Deposit Minimum (AED) | AED 10,000 |
| Term Deposit Minimum (Foreign Currency) | USD 5,000 or equivalent |
| AED Transfer to Other UAE Bank (IPP) | AED 0.50 per transfer |
| AED Transfer to Other UAE Bank (FTS, branch) | AED 5.25 per transfer |
| Foreign Currency/SWIFT Transfer (in or out of UAE) | AED 126 per transaction |
| Correspondent Bank Charge, USD SWIFT Transfers | AED 157.50 per transaction |
| Fast Transfer to Pakistan, below USD 100 | AED 10.50 per transaction |
| Fast Transfer to Pakistan, USD 100 or more | Free |
| Debit Card Supplementary/Replacement | AED 26.25 |
| Foreign Currency Card Transaction Fee | Up to 2% of transaction amount |
| Safe Deposit Locker (Small/Medium/Large, annual) | AED 420 / AED 525 / AED 1,050 |
| Locker Security Deposit | AED 1,000 (refundable) |
| Standing Instruction Setup | AED 52.50 (personal) / AED 105 (business) |
| Cheque Book, First (10 leaves) | Free |
| Additional Cheque Book | AED 1.3125 per leaf |
| Dormant account charge | Free |
| Reactivating a dormant or inactive account | AED 105 per customer |
| Account opening fee | Free |
| Account closure within 6 months of opening | AED 105 |
| Account closure after 6 months | Free |
| Teller withdrawals on a savings account | 6 free a month, then AED 10.50 each |
Two things stand out. International SWIFT transfers can cost AED 126 plus a further AED 157.50 correspondent charge for USD transfers, well above the AED 0.50 to AED 5.25 charged for local AED transfers. And a resident personal account only avoids a monthly fee by keeping AED 5,000 in it, while a business account needs AED 25,000 to dodge the same size fee.
Digital Banking: A Frank Assessment

HBL UAE Mobile is available on iOS and Android. It handles balance checks, funds transfers, HBL Fast Transfer remittances, bill payments, card controls, statement downloads and SMS alerts, with biometric login and OTP authentication built in.
The Pakistan remittance function inside the app is the strongest part of the experience. It connects cleanly to HBL Pakistan accounts and rarely has issues. Where the app struggles is design and depth: certain account tasks still push you to a branch, and the interface trails what UAE digital banks now offer as standard.
Internet Banking
The web portal handles routine banking reliably: transfers, statements, standing orders, cheque requests and bill payments all work without issue. It is not impressive, but it is stable for day-to-day use.
More complex requests, such as account modifications or disputes, still require a phone call or branch visit. For routine transactions, the portal does the job.

Branch Locations
HBL runs 4 branches in the UAE, one each in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, per the bank’s official branch locator. Customers in Ajman, RAK, Fujairah and UAQ manage all banking through digital channels and the 24/7 phone line.
Call 600 522 228 or use the branch locator on hbl.com/uae for current hours and a direct branch line before visiting, since HBL does not publish individual branch phone numbers on its website.

What Paperwork Costs at HBL
Letters and certificates are where a cheap account quietly gets expensive. HBL prices each one separately.
All figures come from the 2026 Schedule of Charges and already include VAT where it applies.
| Document or service | Charge |
| MOFA or Central Bank attestation, per document | AED 300.00 |
| Special clearing of a cheque | AED 210 per instrument |
| Cheque returned, drawn on your account | AED 105 per instrument |
| Cheque sent for collection outside the UAE | AED 105 per instrument |
| Liability letter to a government department or embassy | AED 63 |
| Liability letter to a financial institution | AED 63 |
| No liability certificate | AED 52.50 |
| Release letter | AED 52.50 |
| IBAN certificate | AED 52.50 |
| Account balance or maintenance letter | AED 52.50 |
| Printed statement on demand | AED 52.50 per statement |
| Courier inside the UAE | AED 52.50 |
| Courier outside the UAE | Minimum AED 210, by destination and weight |
| Credit bureau check for a cheque book | AED 36.75 |
| Bank statement verification for a visa or immigration application | AED 26.25 per verification |
| Cheque photocopy, any date | AED 21 per instrument |
| Post-dated cheque handling | AED 21 per instrument |
Several things cost nothing, and they are worth knowing. Opening the account, the first 10 leaf cheque book, e-statements at any frequency, counter cheque cash withdrawal and cheque collection inside the UAE are all free.
So is a returned cheque that you deposited into your own account, and withdrawing a post-dated cheque before its due date.
Closing an HBL UAE Account
Timing decides the cost. Close within 6 months of opening and it is AED 105. After 6 months it is free.
The account closure certificate is free, and so is the account closure statement HBL must give you under the Consumer Protection Regulation.
Ask for the closure statement in writing, and keep it. HBL sets out the escalation route on its own Sanadak page: complain to the bank first, wait 30 calendar days from the date they received it, then take it to Sanadak, the independent ombudsman unit created under the Central Bank of the UAE.
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents are needed to open an account?
A valid passport with visa page, Emirates ID, proof of residence such as a tenancy contract or utility bill, and proof of income such as a salary certificate. These are the exact documents HBL lists on its own UAE account pages.
Can a non-resident open an HBL UAE account?
Yes. HBL UAE offers a non-resident current account, but it needs a monthly average balance of USD 50,000 or equivalent, confirmed on HBL’s own current account page. That is a much higher bar than the AED 5,000 required for a resident account.
What is the minimum balance requirement?
A resident personal account needs AED 5,000. A non-resident current account needs USD 50,000. A business current account needs AED 10,000 to open, though HBL’s 2026 fee schedule sets AED 25,000 as the level that avoids a separate monthly account fee.
What SWIFT code do I use for incoming transfers?
HABBAEAD for HBL’s Dubai branch, confirmed on SWIFT registries and HBL’s own e-SWIFT service. Share it with your full IBAN and account number, and call 600 522 228 to confirm before sending a large transfer.
Does HBL UAE offer a credit card?
No. HBL’s UAE account pages and its 2026 schedule of charges list Visa Classic, Gold and Platinum debit cards only. The Gold and Green credit cards you may see referenced online are Pakistan-domestic products, not something HBL issues to UAE customers.
Does HBL UAE offer a mortgage or Islamic home finance product?
Not as a listed UAE retail product. HBL’s UAE account pages cover current accounts, savings accounts, term deposits, lockers and debit cards only; any Musharakah or home finance product referenced elsewhere belongs to HBL’s Pakistan operations.
How much does an international SWIFT transfer cost?
AED 126 per transaction for the transfer itself, plus an AED 157.50 correspondent bank charge on USD transfers, per HBL’s 2026 schedule of charges. That is separate from any fee the receiving bank may apply on its end.
Are safe deposit lockers available at every branch?
No. HBL’s own lockers page confirms the service only at the Bur Dubai and Sharjah branches. Call ahead, since availability is limited and waitlists form at busier branches.
What happened with HBL’s 2017 New York fine, and does it affect UAE customers?
New York’s Department of Financial Services fined Habib Bank Limited $225 million in 2017 and the bank closed its New York branch, over anti-money-laundering and sanctions compliance failures at that branch. It was a US regulatory action against HBL’s New York operation, not the UAE branch, which continues to operate under its own license from the Central Bank of the UAE.
What happens to my account if I leave the UAE?
Tell the bank before you leave and close or restructure the account. Under Central Bank of the UAE rules, inactive accounts eventually go dormant and unclaimed balances can move to the Central Bank’s unclaimed funds register, so do not simply abandon an account.
Is HBL UAE regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE?
Yes. HBL’s own schedule of charges states plainly that it operates under a banking license issued by the Central Bank of the UAE, and that fees are subject to the regulator’s guidelines.
What does HBL charge to close a UAE account?
AED 105 if you close within 6 months of opening, and nothing after 6 months. The closure certificate and the closure statement required under the Consumer Protection Regulation are both free.
Does HBL charge for a dormant account?
No. The dormant account charge is free. Reactivating a dormant or inactive account costs AED 105 per customer.
How many free teller withdrawals do I get?
6 a month on a savings account. From the 7th transaction onwards each one costs AED 10.50.
Where do I escalate a complaint HBL has not resolved?
To Sanadak, the independent ombudsman unit created under the Central Bank of the UAE. HBL’s own Sanadak page says to complain to the bank first and wait 30 calendar days from the date they received it.
