Janata Bank PLC is one of Bangladesh’s oldest state-owned commercial banks. Its UAE operation has served the country’s Bangladeshi community since the 1970s.

The bank became a public limited company on 15 November 2007 and now operates under the name Janata Bank PLC. Four branches cover the Emirates today: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Al Ain.

Janata doesn’t compete with UAE retail giants on lifestyle banking. It does one job well: moving money from a worker in the Gulf to a family in Bangladesh, quickly and at low cost.

UAE Capital Shortfall: What to Check First

The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) told Janata Bank in July 2026 that its UAE paid-up capital falls short of what’s required. This is the single most important thing to verify before you open an account or send a large sum through this bank.

  • CBUAE reportedly required Janata’s UAE branch-level paid-up capital to rise from AED 100 million to AED 400 million, with a further AED 2 billion cited at head-office level, according to Bangladeshi financial press reporting on the CBUAE letter
  • CBUAE set a deadline of 15 August 2026 for Janata Bank to appoint an administrator or liquidator and begin winding down UAE operations if the shortfall wasn’t resolved
  • Janata Bank’s UAE managing director, Md Mazibur Rahman, said the bank hoped for more time and government support to cover the capital gap
  • Bangladesh Bank’s governor reportedly wrote to his UAE counterpart asking for an extension on Janata’s behalf

Bottom line: we could not confirm what happened after the 15 August 2026 deadline passed. Janata Bank’s UAE website was still live and showed no closure notice as of this review.

Before opening an account or moving significant funds, ask the branch for written confirmation of its current CBUAE standing, or check with the Central Bank of the UAE directly.

Best For

  • Bangladeshi workers in the UAE who send money home on a regular schedule
  • Customers who feel more comfortable with in-person counter service than app-based banking
  • Anyone needing Taka drafts, telegraphic transfers, or direct credit into a Janata Bank account inside Bangladesh
  • UAE-based traders handling import or export flows with Bangladesh who need an LC-issuing partner
  • NRB customers looking to access Wage Earner bonds or dollar-denominated investment schemes, subject to confirming current availability

Not Ideal For

  • Anyone opening a new account without first confirming the bank’s current UAE regulatory standing, given the 2026 capital shortfall above
  • Customers chasing premium UAE banking perks like cashback cards or travel rewards
  • Anyone expecting a modern, self-service mobile banking experience
  • Expats from other nationalities better served by banks focused on their own remittance corridors
  • Customers who need dense ATM coverage spanning all seven emirates

Janata Bank PLC Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Deep Bangladesh corridor expertise, funds credited directly to any Janata branch back home, frequently outpacing third-party exchange counters
  • Government-backed history, decades of continuous UAE operation under sovereign Bangladeshi ownership
  • Direct NRB scheme access, Wage Earner Development Bond, US Dollar Investment Bond and US Dollar Premium Bond available from UAE counters, subject to current terms
  • Branch-specific SWIFT routing, each of the four branches has its own routing code for faster domestic clearing in Bangladesh
  • Familiar, personal service, Bengali-speaking staff and face-to-face banking that older and blue-collar customers tend to prefer

Cons

  • Open regulatory question, CBUAE flagged a capital shortfall in mid-2026 and set a wind-down deadline; confirm current status before committing new funds
  • Small branch count, just 4 locations, with none in Ajman, RAK, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain
  • No proprietary ATM network, withdrawal access depends on partner arrangements rather than a dedicated card system
  • Basic digital tools, no modern mobile app for UAE customers; nearly everything runs through the branch
  • No retail credit cards, rewards, cashback and lifestyle perks aren’t part of the offering

Janata Bank PLC Popular Products

Taka RemittanceFlagship Product

Who it’s for: Bangladeshi expatriates sending money home regularly.

Janata’s UAE branches run three remittance tools: Taka Drafts, SWIFT-based Telegraphic Transfers, and direct crediting into any Janata Bank account in Bangladesh. Each branch has its own SWIFT routing code, which speeds up domestic clearing once funds land in Bangladesh.

Money sent directly into a Janata account inside Bangladesh usually lands same-day, occasionally rolling into the next working day. Because the bank has tie-ups with most major Bangladeshi banks, beneficiaries don’t always need a Janata account themselves.

Watch out: Counter-only service means real queue time, particularly around payday weekends. Bring complete beneficiary details on the first visit, account holder name, account number, branch and routing, to avoid a repeat trip.

NRB Deposit Schemes & BondsBest for Savers

Non-Resident Bangladeshis can subscribe to government-backed savings instruments through Janata’s UAE branches, including the Wage Earner Development Bond, US Dollar Investment Bond and US Dollar Premium Bond.

These products have historically drawn interest because returns are tax-exempt for NRB holders and the principal carries sovereign backing. Standard Fixed Deposit Receipts round out the offering for customers planning a long-term return home.

Reality check: Bangladesh Bank sets and periodically revises eligibility rules, holding limits and tenor conditions. Always confirm current terms and yield rates at the branch before committing funds, and ask about the UAE capital position noted above first.

Trade Finance (UAE-Bangladesh Corridor)For Importers

Who it’s for: UAE-based traders moving goods to or from Bangladesh.

Janata issues Letters of Credit, manages documentary collections, and processes telegraphic payments for the Bangladesh trade lane. The same bank can clear the LC on both sides of the corridor.

Single-institution execution can shorten settlement time and trim correspondent bank costs. For SMEs running recurring shipments, this beats juggling two unconnected correspondent banks.

Trade-off: This isn’t a substitute for a full-service UAE commercial bank offering broad multi-currency trade lines or online acquiring. Janata’s UAE trade desk stays tightly focused on the Bangladesh corridor.

Current & Savings AccountsFor UAE Residents

Who it’s for: UAE-resident Bangladeshis wanting a local AED account at a familiar institution.

Standard current and savings accounts are open at all four UAE branches. An individual current account requires an initial deposit of AED 5,000, confirmed on the bank’s own UAE site.

Opening requires a passport copy, Emirates ID copy, valid visa page copy, two recent passport-size photos and a labour card copy, per the bank’s published account-opening requirements.

Note: Minimum balance and documentation requirements can vary by account type. Confirm specifics, and the bank’s current UAE regulatory status, at the branch before opening.

Janata Bank PLC Fees & Charges

Janata publishes few fees directly on its UAE site. Figures below are what we could confirm; always request a written quote before any significant transaction.

Current Account Opening Deposit, AED 5,000 minimum initial deposit for an individual current deposit account, confirmed on the bank’s own UAE site.

Telegraphic Transfer (TT) Commission, not published on the bank’s UAE site at the time of this review; confirm the live rate at the counter before sending.

SWIFT Charges (Non-Bangladesh), variable. Standard correspondent bank fees may stack on top of Janata’s own commission for transfers outside the Bangladesh corridor.

Account Maintenance Fee, not published on the bank’s UAE site at the time of this review; ask for the current schedule of charges at account opening.

Dormant Account Treatment, follows UAE Central Bank dormancy rules; extended inactivity can eventually move funds to the unclaimed deposits register. A transaction or branch visit keeps the account active.

Cheque Return / Stop Payment, standard UAE market rates apply for returned cheques and stop-payment instructions on issued drafts.

Digital Experience

Janata Bank UAE - who it suits

Janata Bank’s UAE operation doesn’t run a full-featured mobile banking app on par with leading UAE retail banks. SWIFT transfers, bond subscriptions, draft issuance and account opening all still require a counter visit.

What works well: Direct phone lines to individual branches, Bengali-speaking staff, and a long-standing SWIFT network with a routing code per branch.

What frustrates users: No mobile app for UAE-held accounts, and nearly every service requiring a physical visit. Customers used to app-first UAE banking tend to flag this as the biggest gap.

Watch this too: the bank’s site labels an AED-BDT rate as “today’s rate,” but its own timestamp on that figure read June 2023 at the time of this review. Confirm the live rate at the counter instead.

The Capital Shortfall That Puts These Branches at Risk

This is the part of the story that matters most, and it is not on the bank’s own website.

In July 2026 The Business Standard, a Bangladeshi business newspaper, reported that the Central Bank of the UAE had restricted Janata Bank’s UAE operations over a capital shortfall.

According to that report, the CBUAE ordered the bank to prepare for a wind-down of its existing UAE operations unless the deficit is addressed.

The same report names CBUAE Assistant Governor Ahmed Saeed Al Qamzi as having written to Janata Bank’s UAE chief executive on 9 July 2026, and says Bangladesh Bank’s Off-site Supervision Department was informed the same day.

It also reports that the CBUAE restricted withdrawals from the Janata Bank branches’ own accounts held with it.

We have not independently confirmed this with the Central Bank of the UAE, and Janata Bank has not published a statement about it on its UAE site. Before you open an account, move a deposit or buy an NRB bond through a UAE branch, ask the branch directly about the capital position and get the answer in writing.

All 4 branches were still listed and contactable on Janata Bank’s own UAE website when we checked on 20 September 2026.

A wind-down order is not the same as a closure. It is a condition attached to a deficit, and it can be lifted if the capital is injected.

Are Janata Bank’s UAE branches closing?

Not as of 20 September 2026. All 4 branches were still listed on the bank’s own UAE site when we checked.

The Business Standard reported in July 2026 that the Central Bank of the UAE had ordered the bank to prepare for a wind-down unless a reported AED 300 million capital shortfall is addressed. Ask the branch directly for the current position.
